RTW - week 25 (Quokkas!!)

We had three houses lined up for our WA leg, but when the middle one backed out (loooong story) we were stuck without a house, a week before arriving.

Thankfully our next home was free and they graciously allowed us to extend our stay with them so that we wouldn’t be left homeless.

Just when one person lets you down, another steps up right?!

We drove an hour and a half south to our next house swap, and came to a quaint little town with a home overlooking the water. The views from our main floor were beautiful!

We were thrilled to settle in, but were plagued with cold weather and rain off and on for those few weeks. We decided to roll with it and just get moving despite the weather, but this did have us huddled under any form of shelter more times than I can count while out for our walks.

All good memories right?! Kids still talk about “that time” we got rained on.

We visited as many national parks as we could in our small area, making sure to visit Serpentine Park which is home to a few friendly wildfamilies of kangaroos.

The thing with Bryan is that he doesn’t count an animal sighting unless it’s in the wild, and he doesn't have to pay for it.

Tough customer!

So we don’t go to zoos, and he won’t even splurge on a whale sighting boat tour. Apparently it’s cheating.

Thankfully the Quokkas on Rottnest Island fell into his category of "approved animal sightings", so our big excursion for the trip was a boat tour to the Island. I was on the fence as to wether or not we should spend the money, but it was 100% worth it!!

I only wish we could have camped on the island and stayed longer. It was so much fun!

Bryan even spotted (from a serious distance) the water spout of a few Humpback whales. 2 years patiently waiting and this was his sighting.

He lied and said it was absolutely not worth paying the money for the tour. Sure Bry.

Rottnest is home to some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches and of course the overly friendly Quokka, which is apparently a marsupial and even had their own babies in their tummies.

We all had big dreams of getting the famous “Quokka selfie”, but when we finally did find one, it didn’t go very well (hello, they are wild animals!)

I retreated to the realization that yeah, it wasn’t going to happen. So we started to make our way back to the jetty when we started to come across hundreds of Quokkas.

It was a dream come true for the kids. They are so friendly, and kept coming over to us as we made our way.

So far, the highlight of Australia for sure!

Cars are not allowed on the island, and most visitors pay for a bike to get themselves around.

We only had one day, so we opted for the hop-on hop-off option. The bus takes you around the perimeter of the island and you can get on and off as you wish.

If you’re short on time, this is definitely the way to go. We even spotted our first seals!

We ended our day at another one of Rottnest’s spectacular beaches. Before we knew it, the day was over and it was time to make our way back to the boat, not before being rained on of course!
